The Story Behind Myrrha

In ancient times, all creatures of the swamp lived in peace and harmony around the pond enjoying its fruits and cold waters, minding themselves not to pollute the water and taint the earth.

All was good until one day a vile serpent wandered into the swamp and made a pact with a long-forgotten crocodile who, living at the bottom of the pond, was fed up with all manners of creatures wandering around the pond, disturbing the old reptile’s peace. Together, they would take control of the pond and keep the fruits and waters for themselves.

The snake leapt from the trees and poisoned any creatures that dared to come too close, the crocodile reared its foul head from the waters and threatened any creatures who dared enter the pond, baring its gnarly teeth at them.   Without creatures to keep the pond healthy, the water got polluted and the earth tainted. And amidst it all, the snake and crocodile.

The creatures of the swamp were at a loss and met in secret, trying to devise a plan to rid their pond of the serpent and crocodile. “We should just find another pond”, said the dove. “We should poison the waters and get rid of the
crocodile,” said the spider. But none of the creatures in the swamp could come to an agreement.

At long last Myrrha, a small friendly spirit of lily pads, spoke up. “We should not abandon it” she said to the dove, “It is my home. Would you abandon your nest if someone tried to steal it?” She turned to the spider, “And we shouldn’t poison it either, would you poison your web if someone had taken it from you?” The creatures of the swamp went silent, none knowing what to say to the small spirit who spoke so passionately of her home. “I’ll show you what we can do”.

She went to the pond and conjured up large lily pads, purifying the water where they appeared, jumping on them and staying safe from the crocodile trying to scare her away. Next, she took hold of a falling fruit and threw it at the snake, startling it and chasing it away.

It was thus that Myrrha started cleaning the water with her lily pads and protecting it from the crocodile. Though she was always cautious not to step too close to the edge of the pads and remained always vigilant to ward off the serpent if it decided to leap from a tree ever again.
